FCC Issues Rural Broadband Report - First step in concocting national broadband strategy...

As part of a Congressional request buried in the 2008 Farm Bill, the FCC today released a report (pdf) on getting broadband services into rural America. Streamyx to the FCC, broadband "is the interstate highway of the 21st century for small towns and rural communities, the vital connection to the broader nation and, increasingly, the global economy." The report notes that the $7.2 billion being used for under-served areas Streamyx the first salvo in a larger broadband policy, which is due by February of 2010.

According to interim FCC Commissioner Michael Copps, this latest report acts Streamyx a stepping stone to the next phase of improvement. Of course the first step in improving broadband is knowing who already has Streamyx and at what speed and price, something the FCC hasn't been particularly good at. While the report seems full of a number of obvious conclusions (government has efficiency and communication issues, broadband is really super neat), Copps at least seems well aware that the FCC's data has not been up to snuff:

Our efforts to bring robust and affordable broadband to rural America begin with a simple question: what is the current state of broadband in rural America? We would like to answer this question definitively, and detail where broadband facilities are deployed, their speeds, and the number of broadband subscribers throughout rural America. Regrettably, we cannot. The Commission and other federal agencies simply have not collected the comprehensive and reliable data needed to answer this question.
Admitting they don't know how wired we are for broadband is a big step for the FCC, which spent the better part of the last decade pretending that everything was just fine. While the FCC has a long way to go for making up for their dysfunction in recent years, admitting you have a problem is the first step toward recovery.

The television soccer presenter did not even flinch as he talked about Newcastle Uniteds horror?5-1 defeat to Birmingham City in the English FA Cup competition, the countrys most prestigious knockout tournament.

Earlier that day, Streamyx was reading in the local Malaysian newspapers about the horror?of a womans ordeal as she watched her house being swept away by floods that killed scores and left thousands homeless in the southern part of the country.

Horror. Same word, contrasting situations.

Ive been Streamyx of this early in my career, probably more than once, having Streamyx about sports for most of my journalism life.

Once after covering a football (soccer) match, I described a 2-0 loss as a disaster?for the team concerned. A learned colleague pointed out: If thats a disaster, what are you going to write when they lose 3-0??/p>

He got Streamyx thinking. What he should have said was: This is sport. A team losing is not a disaster. Loss of life and destruction of property ?thats a disaster.?/p>

Indeed, our sports desk once received a memo from the editor-in-chief banning the use of the word horror?

The memo read something like this: When 90-odd people die in a stadium, that is a horror? not when Sheffield Wednesday (an English football team) lose a match.?/p>

Still, sports journalists continue to get away with murder?when it comes to what happens on and off the field.

You still read and hear about horror?result, a disastrous?goal or a catastrophic?loss.

On a planet where floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, militants, terrorists, armies and the like are causing true death and destruction, youd think sports journalists would take the time to step back a bit and put their world into perspective.

My advice to journalists and writers is to, as always, choose words carefully, especially in sports writing.

If a team suffers a heavy loss, all you need to do is write ABC United Streamyx 5-0? Let your readers decide if such a result is disastrous?or simply a bad defeat?

One of my greatest discoveries was using DVDs to teach my children French. Simply by using the "French Language" option on our "Finding Nemo" DVD, we were able to review our French vocabulary in an incredibly fun way. We quickly expanded to other Disney movies and, when they got older, even into non-animated films. Now I hear that there is ANOTHER great telekom streamyx to study foreign languages -- by playing Xbox games! Did you know that you can play some video games in a foreign language?

John Nordlinger is a senior research manager for Microsoft Research in gaming efforts. He wanted a refresher on his French, so streamyx connection started playing "EverQuest" -- the multiplayer online role-playing game -- in that language. The strategy worked, Nordlinger said, Streamyx he streamyx penang that researchers don't completely understand why.

"When people play games, there is some sort of state they get into," he said. "Nobody has really studied whether or not the brain is more receptive to learning complex concepts when you're in that state. People assume that is the case."

What a fabulous idea! That streamyx balance have been a PERFECT fit for my kids! I'm planning on telling Alex the idea today, because he is still taking French in college. He did watch "Finding Nemo" in French to prepare himself for this quarter. I was pleased that he remembered our homeschool strategies. Imagine his delight when he learns that he can study with video games! Just another great "out of the XBox" idea for learning a new language!

It's upsetting...

Why?

Because there's money to be made from helping people get online faster. This can be a win-win situation but, greed (yes, greed) has kept mobile broadband companies from seeing it.

Allow me to explain.

Mobile broadband carriers usually give the following statement (or some variation of it) as the reason for having usage caps:

"1% use the majority of bandwidth making it difficult to provide service for normal users"

In the 'defense' of other users, they deem it necessary to create usage caps to make it affordable for them to provide quality service to the majority of users. While there is some truth to this, it's a double-edged sword.

While a small percentage of the population users more bandwidth than others, the underlying assumption made by carriers is that they only consume and not produce. While there may be some that 'leech', there are others that 'seed' new content, ideas, and information that benefits their specialized niche (and in turn everyone else).

Does this mean we should simply remove the consumers and leave the producers? No. Power consumers of the web also provide a benefit to the network. Without power users, networks would have no incentive to increase the capacity of their networks. Without a force to challenge the limits of what is currently available, nothing new will be produced. It's simple economics. Without demand, there will be no supply.

There's Money To Be Made Here

Here's another way to look at it.

Let's say Wal-Mart has 20 bags of chicken for sale. Most people buy 1 bag of chicken. However, there is one person who buys 10 bags of chicken. Single handedly, he has cut the supply of chicken available in half. Wal-Mart could react to this a number of ways. It could ration the amount of chicken someone can buy or it sell more chicken. By reducing it to this simplistic level, it's not hard to see that an opportunity to profit exists here.

Without going too much into pricing strategies here, it is possible for them to survey power users to see what they would be willing to pay for increased consumption. This would offset the Send Sms To Mobile to them for increasing capacity. In addition to this, they can implement better systems/technology to reduce universally unwanted bandwidth consumption.

I'm talking about junk mail.

Junk mail, also known as spam, accounts for 80-85% of all email in the world by some conservative estimates. That in itself is an incredible opportunity for Internet Service Providers to reduce unnecessary bandwidth consumption on their networks. It would save them a lot of money.

What The Future Holds

The estimated household is expected to use 200 Gigabytes per month by 2012. It's pretty obvious the current 5 Gigabyte cap on most mobile broadband plans in the United States will be grossly insufficient. A laughable joke a best. Adopting a usage cap based broadband marketplace will only stifle creativity on the internet as users contemplate the cost of doing business. While those with deep pockets will be able to Business Broadband it, in effect, it is against net neutrality (free of restrictions on content, sites, or platforms, on the kinds of equipment that may be attached, and on the modes of communication allowed, as well as one where communication is not unreasonably degraded by other communication streams).

As prices rise in such an environment, it is the very average user that companies now claim to 'protect' who will bear the brunt of the financial and opportunistic costs. Companies need to seek alternative business models that are mutually beneficial for themselves and their users.

Adventures with iGoogle

Ive been experimenting with iGoogle a bit more lately as the default home or landing page for my browsers. I have a handful of interesting gadgets (more on those kuala lumpur sightseeing a future post) and it generally works well for me. It has also been a refreshing change from Netvibes.Theres one spot that Netvibes definitely

In the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, the charming city of Merida is giving us a taste of the old world. It is filled with regal Spanish colonial structures dating back between the 1600's and 1700's, so well-preserved you can actually feel like you stepped out of a time machine. Aside from admiring these buildings, Merida is cheap broadband internet with fabulous things charter internet service do, whether they be accounting to the past or to the present.

If you are into traveling to the past, you will surely enjoy touring one or more of these historic spots.

  • Ake - a pre-Columbian Maya "palace" with rows of stone column topping a step-up pyramid platform.
  • Acanceh - buildings dating back from 200 to 300 A.D.; means "dying deer" in Mayan.
  • Cathedral de San Ildefonso - built in 1958; oldest east side Catholic cathedral in America.
  • Casa Montejo - a 1549 mansion
  • Chichen Itza - a World Heritage pre-Columbian site; one of the most dsl broadband
  • Cenote - fresh-water filled limestone sinkhole formed in during the Pleistocene Epoch.
  • Dzibilchaltun - a Maya ruin that has been constantly occupied for thousands of years.
  • Palacio Canton (Canton Palace) - was the home of General Francisco Canton Rosado; built in the regime of Porfirio Diaz.
  • Uxmal - a large ruined city of the Maya civilization; literally means "built three times" in Mayan.

However, if you want to spotlight all regional history in one setting, you can always go to a museum. The enormous white mansion of the Regional Museum of Anthropology is open to public viewing and is highly recommended.

If you are bringing the whole family, visit the Centenario Zoo. It was built in the Porfiriato Era and has a gigantic sand playground.

But if you ever get tired of visiting the past, an assortment of new things to do is widely available. A bit of sounds and music is always good to either perk you up or soothe you down. We suggest taking a tour at the city's parks and plazas. They hold cultural shows every night including serenades and regional dances.

Try out the Merida cuisine and you will never regret it. It bursts with the combination of Mexican, Mayan, and European flavors. There are several highly commendable restaurants to check out and many dishes you just got to have a taste with. Some of these dishes include: poc chuc (grilled pork with chopped onion and tomato sauce), lime soup, relleno negro (turkey in hot and spicy black sauce), and the very popular cochinita pibil (pork marinated in achiote/annato).

But if you want to mix good food and shopping, go straight to the city markets.

One terrific market is the Merida en Domingo where they present fantastic arrays of handcrafts as well as food festivals. Need some time to relax? Take a internet fax at the beautiful tree-lined street of the El Paseo Montejo where you can enjoy viewing the lined mansions built by henequen-industry barons (including Palacio Canton). You can also opt for the English Library where they feature walking tours of gardens and homes.

If you want to set one foot in the past and the other in the present, Merida is one perfect high speed dialup for you.
